CHICKBALLAPUR: Thursday was a memorable day in the life of G. Narayan, a pioneer researcher who had headed the Departments of Chemistry at the Central College, Bangalore, and Manasa Gangothri, Mysore.

Prof. Narayan, who hails from Gotakanapur village in Gauribidanur taluk in Chickballapur district, turned 100 on Thursday.

Prof. Narayan, who played a pivotal role in equipping the chemistry departments at the Central College and Manasa Gangothri, is also credited with carrying out pioneering research on Bordeaux mixture and his findings were reported in the proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 1949.

Born on September 25, 1908 in Gauribidanur taluk, Prof. Narayan passed his M.Sc. in Inorganic Chemistry from the Central College in 1935. He got his Ph.D. from the University College in London for his research on “Theory of fractional crystallisation of isomorphous salts.”

On his return from London, Prof. Narayan prepared and published one of the first laboratory manuals for Honours students.

G. Narayana Reddy (81), former Vice-Chancellor of the Karnatak University, Dharwad, and a student of Prof. Narayan at the Central College told The Hindu that Prof. Narayan was an ideal teacher and also a scholar par excellence. He was a rare person among the teaching fraternity.

R. Venugopal, a retired professor who was Prof. Narayan’s student at Manasa Gangothri, said that he was revered by all his students and was a “great human being.”

To celebrate Prof. Narayan’s 100th birthday, his students under the aegis of Karnataka Association for Advancement of Science will felicitate him at the Department of Chemistry, Central College, Bangalore, on September 27. A felicitation volume will be released on the occasion, Prof. Venugopal said.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, relatives of Prof. Narayan felicitated him at a private function in Bangalore on Thursday.
