Prof. B. K. Ramaiah (1921-1991):: founder of Indian Geotechnical Society,bangalore

Professor B K Ramiah, graduated in Civil Engineering (B.E.) of Mysore University, at University College of Engineering, Bangalore, in March 1946, passed the M.S.C.E. of University of Connecticut, U-Conn, U.S.A. in 1956, passed PhD of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, U.S.A. in June 1959. He served as Junior Engineer from 1946-1949, joined as Lecturer in Civil Engineering, Dept of Civil Engg., Univ. College of Engg., from 1949-1954, Research Assistant, Univ. of Connecticut, USA, from 1954-1956, ‘XR’ Fellow of Purdue Research Foundation from 1956-1959, Chief Soil Engineer from 1959-1960, Reader in Civil Engineering, University College of Engineering, Bangalore in 1960 and appointed Principal, Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering from 1963 onwards and Principal, University College of Engineering, from 1971 onwards. He established Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, highway and Airport Pavement design and Highway Materials and Experimental Stress Analysis by Photo Elasticity Strain gauge and stress coat and model studies. He distinguished himself as a teacher and researcher. Professionally he was a member of many National and International Societies, Academic Committees. He has published more than 100 papers in India and abroad. He has organized the Fifth Asian Regional Conference in Bangalore. He has traveled worldwide during his service. He has received several awards from Bangalore University, Mysore University and Institution of Engineers, India. He served as President of Indian Geotechnical Society during 1977-1979. He founded the Karnataka Geotechnical Centre, and acted as Chairman since its inception in 1963. In the fond memory of its founder chairman Prof. B.K. Ramaiah, The Karnataka Geotechnical Centre of Indian Geotechnical Society has launched B.K. Ramaiah memorial lectures starting from the year 1993.

Versatile Venkat Bags State Award

At a glittering ceremony held on October 13, 2012 at RNS Kalyana Mantapa, Hubballi  Sri G. Venkataswamy was honoured with Karnataka Nataka Academy Award for the year  2011 – 2012.  The award RANGASADHANA GOURAVA PRASHASTHI in recognition to his immense contribution to the theatre, was handed over by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and comprised citation, icon of Lord Nataraja, shawl, Rs. 10, 000/- in cash and typical ‘ Dharwad ‘ turban;  Minister for Kannada & Culture and Minor Irrigation Govind Karjola and Smt Malathi Sudhir, Presidentof  Karnataka Nataka Aademy were present.

An ardent drama artist even from school days,  it developed into an everlasting hobby after he founded ‘ Kalagoshini ‘ troupe, while working at Bharat Electronics Ltd., to don variety of roles in plays of  Parvathvani, Sriranga, Badal Sircar, BM Shri among others.  His passion in film society movement started in 1972 when Suchitra Film Society was established and continues unabated even today.  In 2004,  Federation of Film Societies of India honored Venkataswamy for ” Outstanding individual contribution to the film society movement in the southern region”  at a colourful function held at Tirupati.  Even at the young age of 86 years, Venkataswamy is ”
UNCLE ” to innumerable children of Suchitra Bala Jagath, a dynamic wing of Suchitra Cinema & Cultural Academy, caring for neighborhood kids all through the year since 25 years and more so at the camps conduced during summer.  Interested in developing personality, scientific temper and a concern for mother nature,  he has lead children to a number of conferences with a tie up to Karnataka Vignana Parishat.  A former President of  renown Varaprada Venkateshwara Temple, Devagiri he continues to be a life trustee in the Board of Management attending everyday.

Sri Gotakanapura Venkataswamy ( b. 8.3.1927 )  # Sanjeevini 1019, 25 main 15 cross ( Tel 2671 6162 Mob 94 48 04 11 83 ) passed Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Jayachamarajendra Occupational Institute and after serving for a few years at HAL and Central India Machine Manufacturing Company Gwalior, joined BEL to retire as a senior executive in 1985.  From 1985 to 1990 he worked for M/S WS Industries who deputed him to Germany for a fortnight.
Sri Venkataswamy is merrily  married to  Smt Laskmidevamma, who has spared him fully for social, cultural and religious services and they have three son all married ………
Vishwanath ( Geetha ). Anand ( Rajani )  and Murali ( Prema ), five grandchildren and a 3 – year young greatgranddaughter Sloka.
